Ever since Little Miss Sunshine premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival (and was purchased for a record $10.5 million), the big beauty pageant finish has been making audiences laugh until they cry - which is pretty much how the Hoovers seem to approach life in general, so it all works out in the end.Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. There aren't any wasted moments in this movie even the smallest action - Frank buying the dirty magazines, for example - turns out to matter down the line.Īnd then there's the finale. There's nothing radically new in terms of storytelling or character development, but the film nonetheless succeeds, thanks in part to its excellent cast (husband-and-wife directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris lucked out, casting Carell just before he hit it really big with The 40-Year-Old Virgin). But somehow LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE manages to combine the two into something fresh, engaging, and often hilarious - with a dash of "aw shucks" poignancy to boot. It's true that the family road trip comedy isn't exactly a new genre nor are quirky indie movies about dysfunctional families all that hard to come by. This is a delightful film with a funny, tight script. Over my dead body would this movie be shown to anybody at any age who I'm responsible for. This is the worst message to a young person (or any person) that I can possibly imagine. If you encounter a game you can't win (which is every game), you must not only dismiss it as vanity but destroy it.

Here is the message that this movie has to offer: Life is abject misery. I keep hearing about the positive messages that this movie has to offer. This reaches its apex in the famous beauty pageant scene where it becomes apparent that the loser daughter in this loser family stands no chance at winning and, in what borders on a suicide allegory, the family invades the stage and ruins the entire show. Every character who shows an attempt to better themselves is portrayed as a grotesque caricature of naive conformity. It is one excruciating and entirely unfunny failure after another. To view this movie is to follow a group of dysfunctional people and wallow in their misery while trying to work up the nerve to laugh at such knee slappers as heroin overdose and child abuse. Forget about how many times the F word is used or whether or not you can see bare breasts.
